BackgroundDisorders in different levels of body representation are present in hemiplegic cerebral palsy. However, it remains unclear whether the body image develops from aspects of body schema and body structural description, and how this occurs in children with HCP.Objective and methodsIn a cross-sectional study, we investigated 53 children with HCP and 204 typically developing control children to qualitatively evaluate whether and how body schema and body structural description affect the development of children’s body image and whether this development is delayed (...) through HCP. Graph analysis was used to create a lexical-semantic map of body representation from data of a semantic word fluency task.ResultsResults indicated a similar qualitative pattern of influences of sensorimotor and visuospatial experiences on lexical-semantic knowledge of body parts, with a delayed developmental course in children with HCP compared to TD children.ConclusionThese findings suggest that children’s body image seemed to be influenced by body schema and body structural descriptions as indicated by poorer lexical-semantic knowledge of body parts in children with HCP due to missing physical experiences of the affected body parts. This might imply that “body talk” may beneficially complement physical therapy for children with HCP to promote body image development. (shrink)

Neste artigo propomos discutir as trajetórias e encruzilhadas de mulheres negras adeptas do catolicismo e do candomblé, a partir da análise subsidiada por epistemologias situadas no campo do Ativismo Negr@, tomando como referência o feminismo negro e decolonial e a teologia feminista católica, procurando captar as narrativas sobre corpo, sexualidade, etnia, raça e religiosidade, de onde emergem intersecções. Para fazermos esse diálogo, contamos com as trajetórias de duas mulheres negras sul baianas, residentes no município de Canavieiras, autodeclaradas negras, com idades (...) de 53 e 62 anos, sendo uma católica e outra candomblecista, respectivamente. As “trajetórias em narrativas” das duas colaboradoras da pesquisa nos revelaram encruzilhadas de pontos de vista sobre corpo e sexualidade, em que a religiosidade norteava a mobilização de diferentes conceitos e representações sobre o gênero. Nesse sentido, o corpo aparece narrado de diferentes formas, sobretudo como ferramenta para o acesso e a manutenção das práticas religiosas, que através da legitimação de elementos sacralizados permitem a efetivação e veiculação de crenças e valores que atravessam o campo da moralidade, afetando, assim, as percepções sobre os desejos e as práticas sexuais de mulheres negras. A violência contra a mulher é considerada mundialmente como um problema de saúde pública e a América Latina tem sido apontada como a região de maior incidência deste tipo de violação. Esta revisão sistemática objetivou investigar a produção científica latino-americana sobre serviços de atendimento à mulher vítima de violência que incluam psicólogos em suas equipes. Foram realizadas buscas nas bases de dados Scielo, Lilacs, e Portal Capes, com os descritores “violência contra a mulher”, “violência doméstica contra a mulher”, “psicologia”, “psicología”, (...) “violencia contra las mujeres”, “violencia doméstica contra la mujer”. Considerou-se apenas artigos publicados na América Latina, nos idiomas português e espanhol, durante os últimos 5 anos. No total, 10 estudos foram analisados na íntegra. Esta revisão permitiu constatar que ainda há lacunas na rede de atendimento, que dizem respeito não apenas à atuação do psicólogo, mas também às diferentes áreas que compõem as redes de acolhimento à mulher. El 28 de mayo de 1970, Jorge Luis Borges dictó la conferencia “Junín y la Conquista del Desierto” en esa la ciudad. Entre el público presente, un agente de los servicios de inteligencia local, escuchó, escribió y envió a sus superiores una versión de la conferencia y sus impresiones, registro singular que consta en el Archivo de la Dirección de Inteligencia de la Policía de la Provincia de Buenos Aires (DIPPBA). El objetivo del artículo es inscribir el documento en dos (...) niveles: (1) exponer algunas notas y reflexiones acerca de la narración de vidas, momentos biográficos y autobiográficos en la escritura y la estética literaria de Borges que señalan temas afines a lo supuestamente expuesto en la conferencia; (2) ubicar el documento, las lógicas del archivo y la coyuntura política que lo rodeaba en diálogo con lo anterior. Entretanto, a defesa do direito natural implica o combate de algumas formas de pensamento já arraigadas na sociedade hodierna como: o historicismo e o positivismo. Além delas, Strauss também diverge do pensamento que defende a neutralidade da concepção de valores. O objetivo do presente trabalho é traçar algumas considerações sobre o direito natural no pensamento de Leo Strauss, tendo como principal fonte teórica a obra (...) já mencionada. Tratarei, primeiramente, da caracterização do direito natural. Após, analisarei a crítica dos opositores desse conceito. E, por fim, tratarei do significado do direito natural na atualidade. Spanish Jesuits such as Francisco Suárez (1548-1617), José de Acosta (1540-1600), Pedro de Ribadeneira (1526-1611) and Juan de Mariana (1536-1624) had a powerful impact on English thinkers of the magnitude of John Locke (1632-1704), Francis Bacon (1561-1626), Robert Persons (1546-1610), Algernon Sidney (1623-1683), and, later, William Robertson (1721-1793), Thomas de Quincey (1785-1859) and Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953). An influence that was sometimes hidden and always controversial. This work highlights the importance of this influence regarding thought on politics, law and natural rights. (...) Resumo: O presente estudo procura construir novas hipóteses interpretativas sobre a gênese do poder civil em Thomas Hobbes, a partir do estudo da passagem clássica do estado de natureza para o estado civil. Consideramos que tal passagem, para além das interpretações canônicas, é um topos, encontrado na tradição retórica, especialmente em Cícero, em seu De inventione. Neste contexto, o discurso eloquente aparece como elemento originário e fundamental do Estado civil. Tal apropriação por parte de Hobbes emerge dentro de uma perspectiva (...) que trata a arte retórica como fonte de conhecimento, sobrepondo a questão do ornato da linguagem, de modo a compor um importante elemento dentro de sua concepção de poder civil. In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:A few years ago the esteemed Franciscan scholar David Flood argued that when early Franciscans used the term subditi in early texts to describe their work relationships, they "imagined a new way of working" and "gave work a new definition." To them labor was "a social act;" it was for others as well as self; it offered "the possibility of being a complete person," and "the possibility of a (...) human order marked by abundance and justice." It was refreshing to see a neglected subject receive proper scrutiny, and his conclusion, that the first Franciscans had "a particular idea of labor: a way of extending others recognition, proposing solidarity, and contributing more to production that they took from it," is a most welcome addition to Franciscan history. I agree wholeheartedly with the core of Flood's conclusion but believe it needs to be qualified. My primary intention here is offer the needed correction by placing Franciscan work theology in its larger historical context. Once monastic theology prior to Francis is documented I conclude that while early Franciscans did present society with a varieties of possibilities, these were not, as Flood maintains, either new or unique. Their ideas about work were but a continuation of a theology of work first articulated by Peter Damian and fellow reformers. After this main task is completed I offer some further speculation about the role Franciscan behavior and attitude toward work played in the anti-Franciscan criticism of the Late Middle Ages. I suggest that the Franciscan failure to keep abreast with society's expectations regarding work was in part responsible for that criticism.Christian attitudes toward labor are rooted in the Old Testament. Genesis establishes work as an activity proper to God and prelapsarian humanity. In the presence of sin labor becomes difficult and punitive, but continues to be simultaneously redemptive . Jesus "the Carpenter" says little directly about work, but the canonical authors do. Work has intrinsic value and is necessary for self-survival and the community . It is the basis for social justice and salvation . Early Christian literature deals with work in a similar manner. It is infrequently discussed, but when it is mentioned it is given due respect. Tertullian and Origen hint at a theology of work, but one has to wait for monasticism to see work theology become substantive. The Desert Fathers and Mothers and the rules of Pachomius, Basil, Augustine, Macarius, Four Fathers, Caesarius of Arles, the Master, and Benedict all discuss the spiritual necessity of work and mandate its inclusion in the daily life of monastics. During the first millennium Western society was more concerned with working than with thinking about work, but by the eleventh century conditions were more conducive to reflection. Peter Damian recognized the opportunity and responded creatively. Within his voluminous writings is the first sophisticated Christian reflection on the concept of work. It is, we shall see, the foundation for future theologies, including Francis's.Born in Ravenna in 1007 Peter Damian was educated in the liberal arts at Faenza, Parma, and probably Ravenna. Upon completion of his studies he enjoyed immediate success as a teacher, but he retired soon and entered Romuald of Ravenna's Camoldolesian monastery at Fonte Avellana ca.1034. Instead of ending his intellectual career the move actually propelled him into the limelight. By his death in 1072 Damian was a leading intellectual force throughout the West. He was also revered as a pioneering leader of the religious renewal and reform movement of the High Middle Ages. His influence was vast, a fact fully appreciated by Dante and the reason why he chose Damian as his ideal man. Although today Damian's creativity and originality is often overlooked it is hard to ignore these traits in his work theology. The theology is not, however, systematically.. (shrink)

O notável lugar de destaque e o papel central das mulheres nas sociedades africanas pré-coloniais tem sido inferiorizado em empreendimentos coloniais de devastação dos modos de ser africano, com desdobramentos particulares sobre as mulheres em função da instrusão da hierarquia de gênero e da consequente generificação do trabalho. A descaracterização e criminalização das organizações socioeconômicas autóctones, matrifocalizadas, expressa-se pela nomenclatura de “economias informais”. À vista disso, o presente artigo teórico-empírico tem como objetivo articular como a categoria “matriarcado” se aplica à (...) lógica de organização socioeconômica reinventada na contemporaneidade, produzindo autonomia e independência de mulheres. Iniciamos com o embate ontológico e epistemológico que incita a resiliência das estruturas familiares e econômicas matriarcais nas Améfricas. Em seguida, na etapa empírica, constatamos as manifestações da matrifocalidade partir de relatos de lideranças de organizações econômicas e religiosas de matriz africana. Tais tecnologias econômicas matricentradas representam fonte de geração de vida individual e coletiva e – sobretudo – a capacidade de reinvenção dos princípios do matriarcado nas Améfricas contemporâneas. Las opiniones de Denis Diderot y Edmund Burke sobre lo bello ejemplifican la disputa por la subjetividad que tuvo lugar durante el siglo XVIII en Europa, cuando el advenimiento de la estética determinó la separación definitiva de los parientes semánticos bello y bueno. Sus investigaciones filosóficas sobre la belleza presentan algunos planteamientos en común que serán expuestos brevemente. Resalta además la diferencia entre la postura clásica de un revolucionario como Diderot, y el carácter especulativo de las ideas estéticas de (...) un conservador como Burke, las cuales, según algunos estudiosos, le han dado un reconocimiento aun mayor que sus concienzudos y acertados planteamientos políticos. Este artigo visa analisar de que modo as questões pertinentes à situação do Paraguai do Pós-Guerra da Tríplice Aliança serviram de instrumento de luta político-partidária entre nacionalistas e autonomistas durante a campanha presidencial argentina de 1873 e 1874. Para isso, foram consultados alguns jornais de Buenos Aires, uma vez que eram os principais canalizadores dos debates públicos e difusores de representações. Da análise das fontes pode-se apontar que a facção autonomista fez daquele conflito, da ocupação do Paraguai e das (...) questões pendentes daquele evento uma das suas principais armas de combate em sua luta eleitoral contra o nacionalismo. This article explores the political dimension of algorithmic face recognition through the prism of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s notion of faciality. It argues that algorithmic face recognition is a technology that expresses a key aspect of contemporary capitalism: the problematic position of the individual in light of new forms of algorithmic and statistical regimes of power. While there is a clear relation between modern disciplinary mechanisms of individualization and the face as a sign of individuality, in control societies this (...) relation appears more as a contradiction. The article contends that Deleuze and Guattari’s concepts of machinic enslavement and social subjection offer a fruitful perspective from where to identify the power mechanisms behind the problematic position of the individual in the specific case of algorithmic face recognition. How is that when scientists need some piece of mathematics through which to frame their theory, it is there to hand? What has been called 'the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics' sets a challenge for philosophers. Some have responded to that challenge by arguing that mathematics is essentially anthropocentric in character, whereas others have pointed to the range of structures that mathematics offers. Otavio Bueno and Steven French offer a middle way, which focuses on the moves that have to be (...) made in both the mathematics and the relevant physics in order to bring the two into appropriate relation. This relation can be captured via the inferential conception of the applicability of mathematics, which is formulated in terms of immersion, inference, and interpretation. In particular, the roles of idealisations and of surplus structure in science and mathematics respectively are brought to the fore and captured via an approach to models and theories that emphasize the partiality of the available information: the partial structures approach. The discussion as a whole is grounded in a number of case studies drawn from the history of quantum physics, and extended to contest recent claims that the explanatory role of certain mathematical structures in scientific practice supports a realist attitude towards them. The overall conclusion is that the effectiveness of mathematics does not seem unreasonable at all once close attention is paid to how it is actually applied in practice. (shrink)

Resumo O propósito deste texto é mostrar que os problemas enfrentados por Merleau-Ponty, ao longo de seu percurso de pensamento, decorrem dos pressupostos dicotômicos dos quais ele parte. Assim, procuramos trazer à tona outras consequências de se assumir tal pressuposto, o do primado de uma experiência perceptiva muda como solo natal de todas as outras modalidades da experiência. Para tanto, tomam-se em consideração tanto a primeira como a segunda fase do pensamento de Merleau-Ponty.Our purpose is to show that the problems (...) faced by Merleau-Ponty throughout his path of thought arise from the dichotomous assumptions from which he begins. Thus, we seek to shed light on the other consequences of assuming a presumption such as the primacy of a mute perceptual experience as the native soil of all other experience’s modes. Therefore, the first as well as the second phases of Merleau-Ponty’s thought are taken into account. (shrink)

Versões de mundo e cosmovisões completamente díspares são paulatinamente legitimadas no grande processo globalizante de inscrição do outro, o que demanda um tipo de racionalidade retórica e argumentativa, única capaz de adaptar-se aos diversos topoi de um mundo cada vez mais multicultural. A proposta é acompanhar esse debate e concluir que a defesa do respeito aos direitos humanos só é possível (...) descomprometendo-se com pressupostos metafísicos excludentes, pseudolaicos, incapazes de gerar respeito mútuo e solidariedade entre todos os interlocutores. One important role of belief systems is to allow us to represent information about a certain domain of inquiry. This paper presents a formal framework to accommodate such information representation. Three cognitive models to represent information are discussed: conceptual spaces, state-spaces, and the problem spaces familiar from artificial intelligence. After indicating their weakness to deal with partial information, it is argued that an alternative, formulated in terms of partial structures, can be provided which not only captures the positive features of (...) these models, but also accommodates the partiality of information ubiquitous in science and mathematics. In particular, we raise some objections for MM, undermine some of the objections that its defenders raise for OT, and we point out some virtues of the latter with respect to the former.

BackgroundThis article aims to contribute to a better conceptualization of pain and suffering by providing non-essential and non-naturalistic definitions of both phenomena. Contributions of classical evidence-based medicine, the humanistic turn in medicine, as well as the phenomenology and narrative theories of suffering and pain, together with certain conceptions of the person beyond them are critically discussed with such purpose.MethodsA philosophical methodology is used, based on the review of existent literature on the topic and the argumentation in favor of what are (...) found as better definitions of suffering and pain.ResultsPain can be described in neurological terms but cognitive awareness, interpretation, behavioral dispositions, as well as cultural and educational factors have a decisive influence on pain perception. Suffering is proposed to be defined as an unpleasant or even anguishing experience, severely affecting a person at a psychophysical and existential level. Pain and suffering are considered unpleasant. However, the provided definitions neither include the idea that pain and suffering can attack and even destroy the self nor the idea that they can constructively expand the self; both perspectives can b e equally useful for managing pain and suffering, but they are not defining features of the same. Including the existential dimension in the definition of suffering highlights the relevance of suffering in life and its effect on one’s own attachment to the world. An understanding of pain and suffering life experiences is proposed, meaning that they are considered aspects of a person’s life, and the self is the ever-changing sum of these experiences.ConclusionsThe provided definitions will be useful to the identification of pain and suffering, to the discussion of how to relieve them, and to a better understanding of how they are expressed and experienced. They lay the groundwork for further research in all these areas, with the twofold aim of a) avoiding epistemological mistakes and moral injustices, and b) highlighting the limitations of medicine in the treatment of suffering and pain. Develops a critique of the concept of the attention economy from the perspectives of labour, time, and power.

This paper updates, modifies, and extends an account of psychopaths’ responsibility and blameworthiness that depends on behavioral control rather than moral knowledge. Philosophers mainly focus on whether psychopaths can be said to grasp moral rules as such, whereas it seems to be important to their blameworthiness that typical psychopaths are hampered by impulsivity and other barriers to exercising self-control. I begin by discussing an atypical case, for contrast, of a young man who was diagnosed as a psychopath at one point (...) but who lacks the element of impulsivity. He exhibits the usual deficits of empathy and related moral emotions, but by now he has developed effective alternative means of conforming to moral rules, essentially on the basis of self-interest. I think it does seem reasonable to hold him morally responsible if he should violate a rule, despite his refusal to acknowledge any specifically moral reasons. I then turn to more typical cases, arguing that blameworthiness is mitigated by the difficulty of learning alternative means of self-control. In a departure from my earlier work, I do not take responsibility to have degrees. But since both blameworthiness and freedom to do otherwise have degrees that depend on the same factors, I go on to explain how it can be reasonable to blame a typical psychopath for an act he may not have been free to avoid. More generally, my suggestion is that notions commonly conflated in philosophers’ treatments of responsibility should be prized apart. (shrink)

ABSTRACT: Hobbes belonged to philosophical and scientific circles grappling with the big question at the dawn of modern physics: materialism and its consequences for morality. ‘Matter in motion’ may be a core principle of this materialism but it is certainly inadequate to capture the whole project. In wave after wave of this debate the Epicurean view of a fully determined universe governed by natural laws, that nevertheless allows to humans a sphere of libertas, but does not require a creator god (...) or teleology to explain it, comes up against monotheism and its insistence on the incoherence of an ordered world in the absence of a God and his purposes. The following questions were central to this debate: Can we understand the universe as law-governed in the absence of a god? If so, what room is there in a fully determined mechanical universe for human freedom? If humans do enjoy freedom, does the same hold for other animals? Is this freedom compatible with standard views of morality? (shrink)

Industry 5.0 and Healthcare 5.0 converge towards a human centered society, having technological advancement as a lever. In Society 5.0, decentralized autonomous cities and a convergence of physical and cyberspace are the foundations of the new chapter of society’s development. The idea of creating digital replicas and legitimate representatives of human beings in cyberspace has become a pillar of digitalization. Society 5.0 introduces Human Digital Twins as a central element of Cyber Physical Systems that include human factors or are designed (...) to interact with humans in a personalized fashion. Overall, the HDT and neighboring concepts are applied to depict how humans can be represented in a cyberspace. However, there are clear challenges in determining which human characteristics should take precedence, how much autonomy should be granted to HDTs to optimize their functionality and how to conceptualize the digital environment in which HDTs interact with various entities, including other digital agents and stakeholders with agency and decisional power. To harness similarities and differences of current approaches, we propose a classification of HDTs based on meta-characteristics and ethical implications. We discuss ethical implication by focusing on emerging risks and paradigm shifts and anchor the previous discussion in the vision for Society 5.0, questioning whether societal development relying on disruptive technologies, instead of leading to more human-centered societies might be driving humanized societies away from humanity. According to the semantic view, a theory is characterized by a class of models. In this paper, we examine critically some of the assumptions that underlie this approach. First, we recall that models are models of something. Thus we cannot leave completely aside the axiomatization of the theories under consideration, nor can we ignore the metamathematics used to elaborate these models, for changes in the metamathematics often impose restrictions on the resulting models. Second, based on a parallel between van Fraassen’s (...) modal interpretation of quantum mechanics and Skolem’s relativism regarding set-theoretic concepts, we introduce a distinction between relative and absolute concepts in the context of the models of a scientific theory. And we discuss the significance of that distinction. Finally, by focusing on contemporary particle physics, we raise the question: since there is no general accepted unification of the parts of the standard model (namely, QED and QCD), we have no theory, in the usual sense of the term. This poses a difficulty: if there is no theory, how can we speak of its models? What are the latter models of? We conclude by noting that it is unclear that the semantic view can be applied to contemporary physical theories. (shrink)

This paper is concerned with the particular problems raised by observations of phenomena outside the common course of nature for their validation as knowledge. It examines to what extent the content of the reports and, in particular, their lack of intrinsic plausibility affected the methods used in their authentication and the assessment of testimony at the Royal Society in the first half of the eighteenth century. I show that literary strategies were usually necessary but not sufficient for the validation of (...) these kinds of observations. Next, I discuss why visual representations were especially useful in establishing the singularity of the observations, but I point out that their high costs and other restrictions meant that they were not so widespread. In contrast I show that, for a long period of time, testimony was used in the majority of the reports as the true stamp of authenticity. I note, however, that the Royal Society accepted reports by authors of varied social status, level of education and occupation, and I discuss some of the factors responsible for the complexity of the handling of testimony at the Society. I argue against Shapin that in the case of reports of extraordinary phenomena, the competence of the reporter and witnesses was often more important than their social status. O artigo busca refletir sobre a trajetória de mulheres feministas na cidade de Pelotas – RS, a partir de suas narrativas que, de certa forma, foram precursoras, visibilizando suas experiências no ativismo político. Entendemos que todo movimento social atua na formação humana, portanto, é um ato educativo. Utilizamos o referencial feminista descolonial, como perspectiva vinculada à resistência do sistema capitalista mundial-globalizado. Buscamos nossas bases teóricas especialmente nas autoras Heleieth Saffioti, Ochy Curiel, Marcela Lagarde y de los Ríos, Patricia Hill Collins (...) e bell hooks, para discutir sobre a condição histórica das mulheres, em relação à classe social, ao gênero, à raça, à divisão sexual do trabalho e ao empoderamento social. A metodologia utilizada é de cunho qualitativo e, como fonte de dados, se compõe de narrativas biográficas. O conjunto de narrativas que apresentamos nesta escrita foi constituído por entrevistas narrativas individuais, com quatro mulheres que militaram politicamente nos anos 1980 e que, atualmente, têm mais de 60 anos de idade. Essas mulheres participaram de espaços institucionalizados de militância, como o Conselho Municipal da Mulher, o Grupo Autônomo de Mulheres Pelotas, União Brasileira de Mulheres ou sindicatos. Em recente pesquisa sobre trabalho na cidade de Pelotas, foi constatada uma grande situação de vulnerabilidade no trabalho, onde totalizaram mais de 62 mil pessoas em trabalho precário ou informal. Nesse contexto, as dificuldades de uma cidade socialmente desigual levam à criação de grupos de enfrentamento, e é nesse espaço social que as mulheres deste estudo atuam. No procedimento de análise destacam-se as categorias interseccionalidade, divisão sexual do trabalho e empoderamento social. Como resultados, ressaltamos a importância das epistemologias feministas descoloniais para aprender e conhecer a história de mulheres que colaboraram na construção do movimento feminista em prol dos direitos das mulheres. Também destacamos o empoderamento social das colaboradoras da pesquisa, pois são mulheres que se relacionam cotidianamente com a cidade, trabalham, dialogam com outras mulheres em situação de vulnerabilidade e têm consciência crítica que, através da Educação transformadora e feminista, possam colaborar para uma equidade de gênero. In a recent paper, Suárez and Cartwright return to the example of London and London's construction of a model for superconductivity and raise a number of concerns against the account of this construction presented in French and Ladyman and elsewhere. In this discussion note, we examine the challenge they raised and offer our responses.

Consciousness, self-consciousness, mental unity, and the necessary conditions for cognition are issues of paramount importance for two prima facie distinct intellectual endeavors: contemporary cognitive science and interpretations of Kant.
